Deposition and Correlative Characterization of NIST Standard Reference Material Gold Nanoparticles (SRM Au NPs).

In this application, NanoPlus Grids are used as a substrate for reproducible sample preparation for characterization of NIST Standard reference materials (SRM) gold nanoparticles (SRM8011, 8012, 8013). The NanoPlus Grids provide a robust platform to enable correlative analysis using SEM, TEM, and AFM. The NIST SRM materials can be used for instrument calibration or as internal size references.

The NIST SRM Au NPs are comprised of a gold core with diameters of 10, 30, and 60 nm that is stabilized by citrate anions. The citrate-stabilized particles show an affinity for the NanoPlus Grids surface that dramatically simplifies sample preparation and reduces artifacts introduced by sample preparation such as drying effects. Sample preparation is reduced to less than 5 minutes. See Gold Sample preparation video for more specific instructions.

The NanoPlus Grids were selected as the only substrate used for TEM analysis of NIST SRM materials in a recent nationwide interlaboratory study sponsored by NIST and ASTM (ILS-166).

The comparison of particle size for SRM 8011 – 10 nm nanoparticles taken from 26 labs nationwide is shown in Table 1.
